spk_1

Hey, everyone, Coach Dave here we’re back with another episode of Anchored at Harbor Park CrossFit Racine. This episode 88 and joining me at my side is my beautiful wife, Corian and fellow coach.

spk_0

Hi, guys.

spk_1

I’ve come down with I have a little bit of a cold. So if I sound a little nasaly more than usual thats the reason

spk_0

I’m getting over said Cold wasn’t long. What? I think a few people have gotten it, Um, spend that kind of a bad flu season will, saying a lot of things going on with this Corona virus and everything else getting sick. So when you guys listen this, please just remember, we’re diligently wiping down everything in the gym. We have hand sanitizers at the front desk and in my office. Um, don’t be shy to ask for it. We have tissues and all sorts of stuff, So try and make sure we’re washed your hands and cleaning up after ourselves.

spk_1

Yes, cause germs or yeah,

spk_0

Yeah. Unfortunately, David, I spent, you know, a good 24 hours a day together. Pretty much so. I got sick. He’s getting second place. There’s

spk_1

no way around it. No, Um, it’s were kind of dragon today. We didn’t sleep well last night. I don’t know what it was. Their minds were racing.

spk_0

I’m also gonna Okay, so there’s a couple factors that go into this. A It was daylight savings yesterday. So even though look, we got up at our quote unquote normal time, the clock obviously was. Now we’re ahead. So, like, I thought I was working up at, like, 77 30 which is normally get up. But technically, it’s already 88 30 so then going to bed. We like to be in bed by 10. And asleep by 10. 30. Yeah, it was fucking 11th like I quit like I was so wide awake, like and I was like, Oh, my God, you’re not gonna get much sleep, because now you’re getting up at 6 30 and I don’t know if that played a factor, but I just felt like I just laid there. And then I felt like I was just when I did actually fall asleep. Like I feel like it was on Li like a very light sleeper. I don’t feel like I moved. I didn’t dream last night. Like I kept waking up in the same position that I wasthe like staring at the ceiling. Just didn’t stay asleep,

spk_1

huh? But it’s also Jupiter know Meyer’s going by earth what they call it.

spk_0

No, it’s mercury. But you’re what? You’re close. Dave. Bob listens to all my, uh, energy balance. Do do stuff about Mercury being and retrograde. And I talk about astrology and I talk about all that stuff. So that was a huge thing, Thio. I’ve been talking to a lot of people and people just the last couple weeks have been very weren down. They said that this Mercury in retrograde It’s the 1st 1 of the year, 1st 1 of the decade. I should say, too, and it’s just it’s a lot. It’s really exhausting. A lot of people. It’s ruining. A lot of people sleep in technology and all that stuff. So,

spk_1

yes, if you’re having trouble sleeping, maybe that’s the reason you believe in that stuff. I mean, we’re all connected. We’re all part of the universal, believing it

spk_0

don’t believe it. It’s probably still affecting

spk_1

you, All right, so we want to talk about personal growth. And I know we’ve done some episodes like this in the past. But you know, we have some new members here, and it’s all we wanted to kind of share just some new ideas and help you guys like, What is personal growth Korean like maybe you could explain it for somebody’s listening. It’s like, What is it? Is it? It could be all types of things, but

spk_0

I think personal growth for me is like always like what? Stop that. One thing you can do to better your life, whether it’s your professional, personal, spiritual like, what is it that we can keep improving upon? Because when you just stay stagnant, life is boring and it doesn’t accomplish anything. And we reflect back going like, you know, what we even do with the last year. But when you’re growing professionally, spiritually, personally, you can look back and look at this is all the stuff that I did this all stuff I accomplished and personal growth. It’s just accomplishments

spk_1

not being stagnant, not being like, always looking for ways to improve. I like just not being comfortable being comfortable. Yeah, so a lot of times when we get new clients that come to us haven’t really done anything fitness wise or maybe they’re looking to upgrade their fitness, I would say So there’s like the two, the two avenues there. Somebody’s like, Hey, I know what to do. I’m coming, you guys, because I just want you to tell me what to do. And then you have the people who were like, Yeah, the same thing. I’ve been working out, just bored with my current routine, and I need some I need upgrade. Can you guys, your program looks awesome. I want I want to coach you tell me what to do? Yeah, and that’s, you know, that is one personal growth. And then we see you know, the blaspheming of that personal growth as they get in here, because it’s maybe they get a little bit more confidence than they feel more comfortable. And then oh, my gosh, the meeting. People who are like minded and they don’t have to be so reserved. You know, there’s all these different ways of

spk_0

thinking. Yeah, and I think to when you talked about people like, Oh, I’ve already been doing some fitness and I want to come to you don’t change. But that program could be for many different reasons. Maybe its strength. Maybe it’s cardio. Maybe it’s just community. I mean, there’s tons of people who come to us not maybe necessarily to change their fitness, but to change you there around in their environment of that fitness. And I think that that’s that’s personal growth that is pushing forward. What’s up? 1% that we can do better? Um, I think, um, for me, I have a lot when it comes to you, my professional and personal girls. Right now, I don’t think or lately I don’t think that, like my fitness, has been like a main goal put. I’ve really been pushing a woman’s You don’t professionally and personally, yeah, with my mindset.

spk_1

Yeah, and beat a professional. You have to be vulnerable when I think that is the hardest part. You know, we’ve got to go on a couple of these podcasts and realizing that it’s okay to not always look and be this like everything’s perfect. It’s okay to like people connect better with that. You know, that’s one way of personal growth. You know, we’ve talked about her. I’ve talked about meditation. You’ve talked about journaling, you know? Let’s let’s, I guess maybe dive into that for some people who, like I said for our newer members, you know, like I said, we’ve done a podcast like this in the past and talked about ways you can, you know, get your mind right. Talked about meditation on the benefits there, but like, what are we? What are you doing? Currently, I guess, to make sure that you have personal growth.

spk_0

I think that’s a great question, because that was a good time to reflect on. It wasn’t March or April when we went Thio Um babe grosses Business Summit

spk_1

Been march 2 years ago

spk_0

No. Three. Yeah, and I want to say that that probably was the catalyst for us as owners to really break to that next level of personal growth. I think that the business summit although it was geared towards a different industry of fitness l think it was geared towards fit body boot camps, which we don’t really have a lot a lot around here, but I guess they’re big everywhere else in the world. But in essence, it still was about owning that and what that looked like. And it was like a three day intensive, like, 10 hour day summit with, like leaders in the industry and people who had done it. And the things and I was like is probably the first time that I sat in an audience and was like, I’m not gonna be shy about taking notes, raising my hand, answering questions like again, like you said, being vulnerable and maybe fucking it up because I was like, I’m here to change what we’re doing because what we were doing waas getting us the same results and we were struggling and so that was a catalyst. I think for me personally to really like, be okay with being transparent. And then after that is when I finally got my first actual journal, I don’t know why, but, like in my head, like journaling was like, reminded me of like having a diary is like early adolescent, and that just didn’t go well in my household. I don’t think for any reason that I was just embarrassed about who I was and if anybody ever found it. So, like, I’ve really just like again. Here’s my journal. This is what I think about. And then, over the last three years, that journal has manifested itself into bigger and bigger things. You know, I spend five minutes in the morning, five minutes in the evening, and then Rachel recently. Last couple once got me a second journal. So, no, I do both of them. I have a planner that I write out my day and my to do list and my schedules. I meditate. I joined Toastmasters. I, um, work with health coaches for myself and business coaches for myself. Like so. I really think that, like, every time I, like get something and then I became state. I have. I find that next level and his last three years have been a huge development in my life.

spk_1

Yeah, I think obviously, I’ve known you for Tiny, um that seeing your growth, you know, has been pretty awesome to see. Like, you know, you’re you’re speaking, which I guess most people don’t know what Toastmasters is. Why don’t you explain that

spk_0

matters in itself is like a leadership development in public speaking group. The reason that it’s a leadership development is because it helps you just hone in on your own personal thought to ask you a lot of questions about who you are, who you want to be. What leadership is helps you to sell yourself. So it’s not even just for people who want to do public speaking like if you have interviews for jobs. If you will want thio move up in your company. If you want to apply for different jobs, it just helps you to hone in those skills for work and leadership through public speaking.

spk_1

Yeah, I mean, most people don’t want to speak in public. That’s like the number one fear anyways, so no Bravo. Thank you what you take first. Okay? Just this past week

spk_0

did take first, so I’ll be moving on next month. I’ll be moving on to the division. So this was area. Now? I have the division, so

spk_1

maybe I’ll have to recap that, um, you mentioned something about, like, manifestation. And I know your speech was on it. Yeah. So let’s talk about something that, like the power of journaling and why it’s important. Like it’s not just writing a bunch of words down, but having oh, my God. Diaries. So to say, or a daily journal that guy do towards a specific goal, like I’m doing one now, um, I forget the name of it, but something with a hitcher goals in 100 days? Yep. So it’s a journal, And it you basically say what you want your goal to be in 100 days, and then each day it asks you, you know, things. One. What do you have before today, then? Like what? You reflect back in the day at night, You know, like what went well today, What are three things that you struggled with, and then what are some? What are some ways you could get around those struggles, you know? So that way, you know, like, tomorrow. Like, Okay, I’m not gonna let that happen because I just said how I could fix it. Yes. So now you know, it helps you. Then it’s asked very acid, like finishing thoughts. Or are you closer to your 100 day mark? You know, that just keeps you on point. And then there’s a 10 day check in every 10 days. It fills out like you have recap the last 10 days, and it’s been helping. I feel like No, really, he helps keep you on point. That’s my thing. Like, I’m big on visual cnet like setting small. Our goals are, you know, like, Okay, let’s break down this quarter and what we want the business to look like in 1/4 And then, like, what do we want? When we did, our broke down 1/4 to for all of our events, you know, like, what do we want this this quarter to be about? Yeah, that’s me. Like I like to break him down into that and then make those smaller goals inside there. But, like, let’s speak out. I guess the power for you in the power of manifestation of like putting something down on paper and what that went for for you.

spk_0

So I think that you really kind of hit it on that with the journaling. I think sometimes when you say that word journaling people go, I have a blank page and I just have to get it. It’s in my head on this paper and like I’ve talked to, a lot of people are like, I don’t want a fucking address The things that are upsetting me or traumatizing to me or trigger I’m like That’s not what journaling always is about my journaling focuses on all the things positive that I want to dio. And so what you said is like, What are your goals? How are you working towards them? How did you work towards them today? And I think that that’s what called guided journal illness, which is what we d’oh. It’s much better for me. So manifesting those things is basically what we’re both doing is we are putting down on paper. This is what I want to achieve, whether right now our goal is to hit a certain amount of members, Our goal is to hit a certain amount of revenue. My goal is to make the international speech contest, which is in Paris, and get out of debt personal. So I’m writing those down and putting it out into the universe. What I want to achieve then from there, people are like, Oh, things was magically happen. Fuck, no one does it every day you have checking to be like, What actions did I take and did it make me get close to Michael or further from my goal, if the actions to you further from your goal that we re adjust and we do, you try from out. If they took you culture their goal, then you’re going to keep doing Maur off the good stuff. And that’s what manifesting iss,

spk_1

right? Great. Yeah. You know, like it’s not just be like, oh, I want $100,000 magically wrote on papers what’s gonna happen? Yeah, that’s not going to just happen. But like you said, if you have a specific goal like and then so you have a goal and then you work every day, you know, you see it, you put in place to you. That reminds you of it and every action that you take and then you have to recap. Like you said at the end of the day, you know, it just keeps your mind on that goal. And when you’re when you’re focused on a goal, then you’ll achieve it. And I think one of the things that kind of help is, you know, seem like your manifestation of your cookbook. I know that you talked about

spk_0

It’s right here.

spk_1

Yeah. I mean, you took that from never wanting to really cook. Yeah, to to watching me cook to being like, What is that? What is that seasoning due to office? You know, just really having a love and passion for cooking on health coaching and saying that all the recipes that we came up with and we thought of, you know, gotten changed to our own, shared with other people and other people reacted to it. They are piloted Lee and say, Hey, those were really good recipes. And now we put it on paper, and now it’s printed into a nice booklet as our first. I guess cookbook, You got your recipes from breakfast lunches, dinners and snacks like a lot of people could enjoy it. Um, it’s like, How did you manifest that

spk_0

literally was sitting in my office one day and thought it’d be funny if someone who would never knew how to cook growing up wasn’t professionally trained, never been to school and very late in life, had a cookbook and gave it to others? Well, you went to school. I did, but not for cooking. And I’m just saying like that didn’t go to cooking like culinary school and be like You can learn anything you want to learn. And I think what’s weird is on the way to that business summit. Well, I listen the audio book Four Hour Work Week by Tim Ferriss, and essentially, he breaks down how to learn things or, like how to get things done faster. And then he’s got another book. It’s called The Four Hour Chef, which really isn’t necessarily about being like a shaft. But it’s about like taking the big totality and breaking it down into really easy steps and just kind of ran them one at a time and like what’s the most important? And, um so I was like, Oh, well, if he could be a chef and, like, learn how to do that like maybe ocular. I could have a good book and share with people, and I just put it on my vision board. And every time we do our quarterly goals, I have extras and they’re just just there. You know, my next thing is like creating my own journal for somebody you know and other people to help them, like with guided journaling and like the questions and things, because now, like there’s so many words that I like questions, I asked myself. So basically, do Abla Blank Journal. But I have certain questions. Let me know that asked me and propel that personal growth for me, and I’d love to show that with other people. So that’s like my next step, along with a i’ma put out there in the world, a wellness retreat. I want to do a weeklong wellness retreat, so those are all things that are gonna be manifested. And what happens then? You like you said, You take the action steps that you need to get there, and that’s the personal growth. And that’s what personal development is because, like you said, you can’t just put something out there and then not take the action steps because your actions, that whole quote your actions speak louder than words. I can say that I want six pack yaps every single day. But if I’m sitting here eating like shit and not working out and not sleeping and maybe go to the bar every night, that do you truly want that? So do you need to adjust your goal or adjust your actions? And I think that by guided journaling and reflecting in person growth, you can decide what those things are for. You

spk_1

know, that’s like my favorite book is Remember, remember your why? Or and then also like quote. Remember why you started? It is about our wall to remind you, you know, it’s it’s a it’s a thing to help you manifest. You know? Why did you start this fitness journey? Right? Because it is hard. It takes discipline to get in here every day or three times. Week five, whatever it takes discipline. You have to make the conscious decision to be like I’m tired, maybe after work, and I need to still go to the gym where I need to wake up early get to the gym because I know that later on in the day, I’m not gonna have the energy to do so

spk_0

Fucking grocery shopping, meal, preppy or any of that stuff.

spk_1

So it takes it takes that discipline. Um, but that’s why I like when you sit down with us for gold sessions, we ask you what is your What is your number one goal? We’re trying to help you manifest that. And through what we’ve learned, we’re asking you those questions like Okay, well, what steps can you take today that are gonna propel you to that? And the goal of that, obviously, is to kind of help you reflect and think about it. And then, like when you’re not feeling so motivated or you kind of fell off a little bit earlier. All the weather is nice or this or that. Maybe you can reflect back onto that. Remember why you started? What are your goals? And like you said, if your goal was to lose a certain amount poundage or your goal was to put on a little bit of muscle mass, maybe you’re training for a marathon. You’re not gonna take the steps to get there, then maybe need to rethink your goals or you think, rethink those steps to get there?

spk_0

Yeah, absolutely. I mean, just with the cookbook itself. Like so when I first put it out there, like in my mind, I had envisioned, like a Julia Child cookbook. Or like, uh, for whatever reason, there’s like this one cookbook baking book that my mom might can’t get every year for, like, the last 1,000,000,000 years. But I was like, Well, how do you find a publisher? And I said, Well, what do I need to be in a cookbook? How many recipes you like? Those are all, like, overwhelming questions, and I’m like, Whoa, like I can’t even worry about that right now. What do I have to do right now? Oh, come up with recipes. How do I come up with recipes without having to do this for, like, what’s practical for me and for me and you? It was every week we came up with a new recipe. After 52 weeks, that’s 52 recipes. Now there’s some repeats in there and things we’ve read on our weeks. We’ve taken off, but over time, that’s how I built up the recipes and tried them and tested them and did all those things eventually. Then that was my first step. Create allrecipes second step, figure out what that looked like. So then putting them together so they looked visually appealing. And then that was where Rebecca came in because she’s much better had that than me. And then she figured out and chan in how to print it. Boo, don those air the steps And now I can put it out there. But sometimes I think we get so overwhelmed that like we don’t even know where to begin. And the I promise you too. If you come in here and you you don’t know what begin just literally. I tell people anything, anything at all just do in because it’s either gonna work her it’s not. And then, you know, and then you can get culture gold. And I think that people are so afraid of doing it wrong that they just don’t do anything. And that’s the worst thing you

spk_1

could D’oh! Yeah. Yep. Or they’re so far from their goal like, Oh, now it doesn’t even matter.

spk_0

Yeah, they just think he’s been over our Jeanne leaps and balance they need to make. And they just need to think about what’s tomorrow. What can I

spk_1

do? Weigh, say that a lot like the 1% Just try to get 1% better every day. You don’t have to, like, tackle everything. Just small steps. You know, like my 100 A journal. Like I don’t have to do it all now. I have 100 days to get to that point. And one tonight. What steps can I take to get there?

spk_0

And I’m sure it’s How many lines does it give you for that?

spk_1

No, I mean, there’s three. What are the three micro goals in a day? Micro goal. So, like, what? Can you know? Like, what is your goal? You know, today I’m grateful for this. What? Three steps? What? Three micro steps today. We’re gonna take you to your goal.

spk_0

So essentially you’re doing three things. But that’s the other problem. Some people think of 100 things to do. It’s like just the reed. What are the three most biggest things that are going to propel you forward? That’s it. Focus on that. I will also tell people for personal growth and personal development. If you are unwilling in any way, shape or form to verbalize what it is that you’re trying to achieve, you’re not going to achieve it. You don’t have to tell everybody, but if you can’t write it down and you can’t imagine it and you’re too scared to put it out in the world, you will be too scared to take the actions. So either it’s something we need Thio again take smaller steps for or just be unapologetically you and just go for it. There’s eight billion people in the world and they’re all trying for something, and it’s okay.

spk_1

I mean, And I think the other thing, too, is obviously the biggest. What is everybody scared of failure? Like what? What if what if you’re no way wants your cookbook? What if you mean like we all come up with these things in our mind? But if it doesn’t, if it doesn’t manifest. Okay, well, maybe you took nine steps to that 10th step, right? And you’re still closer to that goal, then. You know what? Maybe didn’t hit it in 100 days, but you’re still Yeah, there. You know,

spk_0

it’s not like Oh, my God, this was a waste of time. Because you’re again. Now you’re closer. Maybe. Maybe what you thought would only take 100 days is really gonna take a little bit longer. My cookbook I wanted to have out in six months. It’s been three years, so you know, like it happens. But I didn’t give up on it just because it took longer than I thought.

spk_1

Yeah, and that’s I think, Like I said, that’s what we were up. That didn’t happen. But, like, you just have to stay true to it, like you look back. Like the trials and tribulations that you had, like, you are gonna fail if we fail most every day.

spk_0

E something

spk_1

I didn’t mean, You know, failure could be I didn’t hit my three micro goal. So then, you know, I write that down. What? The end of the day on the recap. What was hard today or what? No, I didn’t hit this. I didn’t do that, you know? And then you try to work and corrected. The biggest thing about failure is learning from your mistakes and forward. And that’s another personal growth. Is looking at a failure instead of like being like, Oh, I failed. He’s more off looking at and saying Okay, how can I make this better?

spk_0

Yeah. How can

spk_1

I learn from that?

spk_0

I think for me personally, I feel like that is the biggest personal growth. Achievement is being able to look at your actions good and bad and take responsibility for them. And I think that I was always embarrassed to do that because I always had, like, had a chip on my shoulder and something to prove. So, like if something didn’t go well, I get very frustrated over it. Andi, Very defensive. And now I’m like, No, that didn’t work. What now? Like, you know, on boarding new clients for the gym and for nutrition sometimes doesn’t go well, like I had a phone call was on this morning. That 10 a.m. And she’s so three and very okay with how things went. But we didn’t get on the phone until 10 20 because of this. That and the other thing. But, you know, I didn’t count his failure. Now I know. Okay, Next time I do this, maybe I need to reevaluate. I didn’t basically were emailing. I should have gotten her number. So that way, when she didn’t show up, I could just text her right away or call her right away versus us, waiting on e mails back and forth. Um, live and learn right

spk_1

about it. Mmm. Any final touches on this personal growth podcast?

spk_0

I would say again, take responsibility for your actions. Good and bad. Be okay with how they’re going and let them teach you how to get closer to where you want to go. But no matter where you are in life, I mean, I don’t think we’ve ever had a spot. We’re like, Okay, we’re good here. Like you’re always gonna level up and you’re always gonna push through. Like if I stayed with the same journal I had three years ago, I’d be doing the same things I was doing three years ago. And I’m in a much different place. And he’s something that’s gonna push me to that next place.

spk_1

Yeah. And you’re all set to find out what works for you. You know, meditation was big thing for me for a long time. Um, don’t do it as much anymore. Just right now, just into the journaling. Just truck that out like you don’t have to be the same thing every time we find out what works for you. You know something? We have a vision board, just a simple whiteboard in our house in our office that we you write down things and, you know, we see it somewhere. We can see it every single day. That’s one you know, so that you have your big goal. And when you hit it, obviously you can have another goal. You know, one of our goals is to attend a Ben Burge around Summit for tow, level up ourselves as bosses. If anybody knows who Ben Berger out is, Ben Bergeron runs Crossman New England, and we look up to him pretty, pretty, highly and considered one of the best gym owners, I guess in my eyes industry. So you know, he holds a summit at his gym for two days and basically invites you out. You can come and watch how his team and his coaches and how he runs his gym, and you can learn from him and ask him questions. And that’s something that Cory and I want to do to be to level up his bosses you know, like never being comfortable just where we’re at, we’ll be better. And then how can we make our coaches better? Which then ultimately makes our athletes happier and our athletes better. So, you know, just, I guess, finding what works for you. And, uh, you know, if that’s journaling awesome, that meditation. Awesome. If that’s a wet a vision board, great. But if you think it’s a little hokey Pokey, you haven’t tried it yet. Definitely recommend that you get on board with it. Yeah, you know,

spk_0

just start small and take it one step at a time and just know you gotta be will. And you’ve got to be willing to get uncomfortable. Otherwise, that growth isn’t gonna happen. But growth on Lee happens when we’re uncomfortable.

spk_1

Exactly. All right. I think that’s good. Wrap it up.

spk_0
